Grain Spawn & Sterilization

Preparing the substrate for life. The art of grain spawn and the 3-hour rule.

Hydration

Properly hydrating your grains is one of the keys to being a good mushroom cultivator. Cook grains submerged in water until soft enough to chew but still firm enough to stay separated. Mycelium and mushrooms love water so as much as you can get into the grain is ideal for them and keeping the grains separated is the ideal situation for you to handle them and using them to inoculate other mediums. Once the grains are properly hydrated remove from the heat, drain, and spread out your grains to dry. you want to have the grains dry to the touch on the outside. Towels, a fan or the sun can be used to speed this process up. Once they are dry you can pack the grains into jars or bags for sterilization. if using jars leave about 1/4 to 1/3 headspace to be able to do transfers and "break and shakes"

Pro-Tip: Save that initial drain water! It's full of starch and makes incredible agar.

The Instant Pot Shortcut

If using an Instant Pot, these hydrated grain timings have proven successful:

  • Barley: 0 minutes (bring to 10 PSI and shut off immediately).
  • Deer Corn: 11 minutes (10–15 PSI, then shut off).

Note: Always let the pressure equalize naturally. Never vent early.

Sterilization

IMPORTANT: While many online sources recommend 90 minutes, my experience has proven that 90 minutes is often not enough for reliable results. For total success, run your Pressure Cooker or Instant Pot for 3 hours. It ensures total sterilization and saves you from the heartbreak of contamination.

Oven Sterilization Tek

If you don't have a PC or Instant Pot, you can use your oven:

  • Recycled jar lids with a seal need to be vented. Puncture the lid with a tool of your choosing. A nail and hammer, drill etc. Then fill the hole with polyfill, a rag, a cotton ball, cover with "micropore" bandage tape, or for best results use a stick on mushroom filter patch.
  • Unmodified Canning Jar Lids Flip lid upside down and tighten the ring to prevent sealing. use lids over and over again.
  • unmodified PP Lids Apply lids loosely (tighten, then back off slightly). Let cool completely (overnight is best) before tightening the lid and handling.
  • Bake in the oven at 250°F (121°C) for 3 hours.
  • Place a pan of water on the bottom rack to maintain moisture in the grains.
